I was very happy to take part as one of the keynote speakers in the final symposium of Academia and Cultural Production in Sweden: The Perspective of Postmigration, held at Malmö University and organized by the Malmö Institute for Studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare. The symposium brought together scholars working on postmigration, cultural production, belonging, and the changing place of migration in contemporary European societies.
My keynote, “The unresolved coming out of the Maghrebi French gay character: reflecting on the place of queer sexualities in postmigration,” examined how Maghrebi French gay male characters in literature and film often occupy a fragile narrative space, shaped by race, sexuality, migration, and national belonging. Through figures such as the fetishized object of desire, the closeted man, and the runaway, I reflected on how queer sexualities both complicate and expand the critical possibilities of postmigration studies. The program also included a keynote by Regina Römhild and discussions with the project team around ongoing research and future publications.
