Braille as Literature, NYU London

On 5 August 2026, I presented “Braille as Literature: Tactile Form, Editorial Mediation and the Making of Literary Texts,” at the Research Salon Culture, Rights and Representation in the 21st Century, held at New York University’s London Centre. Over the past year, I have been developing this new strand of research alongside my work in French and Francophone literary studies. Rather than a departure from that work, it extends it in a different direction, bringing questions of literature, technology, accessibility, materiality, and editorial mediation into conversation with the history and practice of French Braille.

The presentation was an opportunity to share the project at an early stage and to discuss some of the methodological and archival questions that will guide its development. I will be sharing more of this work soon, including research on French Braille and its literary and editorial histories, as I continue both the archival work and my own study of Braille.
